Peripheral edema , which you described is common with cardiac failure, renal dysfunction and liver disease(cirrhosis). An echocardiogram would be required to look for the ejection fraction among other parameters. The diuretics can be tailored accordingly in line with the physical symptoms of dyspnea and the echo findings. If you are in fluid overload with rales, crepts up to the lung bases and distended jugular veins then intravenous diuretics may be required. In addition if the blood pressure is not maintained and there is severe ventricular failure or associated arrhythmia like atrial fibrillation then digoxin may also be considered.
Renal function tests should also be done to see if there is any compromise on that end. You may apprise your doctor of these possibilities as these decision need to be taken in a clinical setting.
