Hi,

Ingrown hair and localized infection can present with tenderness and pain around the affected region. Usually there are other signs such as redness, skin warmth and swelling around the affected areas. If your sure you have these at the pain site, yes it could be related to ingrown hair and infection. If you are not sure, please post picture of the affected area. There is option to upload images here. It is available on the right side of this page.

Other possibilities are related to trigeminal nerve neuralgia and temporal arteritis. Both the condition are diagnosed clinically after careful examination by a neurologist. I'll wait for your reply to comment more on these two condition.

Brief Answer:
Temporal arteritis and trigeminal neuralgia needs to be rule out...

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

As there are no local signs of inflammation, I would want to rule out aforementioned conditions on basis of the described symptoms.

Temporal arteritis involves inflamed arteries especially the one located above ears. It's a chronic condition therefore needs chronic anti-inflammatory measures. However trigeminal neuralgia is caused due to irritated trigeminal nerve. This condition will ease off gradually but can recur again.

The good news is both these conditions are relatively rare. What you may have could just be a non specific pain or may be a stress related headache. But I will highly recommend visiting your physician or neurologist. Careful clinical examination followed by a complete blood count / ESR test is necessary. Your doctor will know about the test.

In the interim, you can take over the counter pain medicines such as Aleve twice daily until the doctors appointment.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more information.
