Bacterial vaginosis is very common in females where normal vaginal flora is replaced by anaerobes and other organisms.
In this there is fishy odour.
Vaginal douching has been implicated as a risk factor in Bacterial Vaginosis.
Lactobacillus plays a very important role in reducing the pH below 4.5.
Anaerobes produce volatile amines and organic acids causing fishy smell.
Detection of clue cells is a positive test for Bacterial Vaginosis.
You can use metronidazole and clindamycin vaginal pessaries or can take them orally after consulting your gynaecologist.
Avoid washing genital area with soap , shower gels and other alkaline detergents.
Use cotton underwear and keep the area dry.
Recurrence is very common so one should be cautious.
