Why Does My Child Cough At Night?

Question: Hi my daughter is 2 1/2 Year’s old . She is coughing issues from September after every 2-3 days she is down with cough .Now she only coughs at night at around 4 to 6 am for 30 minutes or so and around 5pm to 7 pm for 30 minutes or so while she is awake I usually give her honey and warm water ,otravin spray it’s been week .what should I do with the regular cough and cold issues?
I can hear phelgum sound when she coughs .also she has blocked nose . Also it’s been while she have cough and cold issues every 2-3 days.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due an allergic component. Treatment is supportive and usually comprises of antiallergic medication and mucolytic. The blocked nose is also due to the same cause. Giving Montair LC Kid (monteleukast + levocetirizine, prescription medicine) should help. Cetirizine is an over the counter alternative that can also be given instead. Meanwhile, you can continue to give honey. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

Hi doctor ,

I just wanted to check if Montair LC can have possible side effects or will it become habit also I have notice she had breastmilk whenever she had coughing can that be issue ?

The most likely side-effect of Montair LC is increased sleepiness. But that is not something to be concerned about. Otherwise it is safe and widely used. It is not a habit forming medicine.

The child feels insecure while the child is not well. It is quite natural that the child will try to breast feed more during these times. It is nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks doctor for the advise one more question is it safe if I apply little Vick’s (baby Vick’s vapour rub )at night on her night when she coughs .

You can feel free to apply Vicks vaporub. But it does not help. In case of adults, it is just the external sensation that seems soothing. In terms of the ailment, it does not help.
