Posted on Wed, 9 Oct 2024
Question: My daughter (8 months old baby) is having fever from yesterday night, It is almost 100-101F. We have been giving Paracetamol 1ml every 4hrs however fever keeps coming 101 again. Brought her to hospital they have looked for infection in ear and throat and we have given COVID test and urine sample as well, all comes negative. Not sure what could be the problem. Need help.

Note: Me and wife got fever as well this week (could be seasonal) but we recovered with Paracetamol and Antibiotics.

Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Could be viral

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Based on your description Covid and urine tests are negative . As your doctor has checked physically , no need to worry . It may be seasonal viral infection as family members had similar symptoms recently . Viral fever takes a few days to settle . Continue paracetamol and do follow up with your doctor in next 2 days if fever persists. In that case he may prescribe antibiotics if required after examination.
Keep feeding her liquids and make sure urine is at least 6 to 8 times daily
Wishing your child speedy recovery

Thank you for your reply doctor.

Fever settled down, she is okay now. It took 24hrs exactly for the fever to come down, She had high fever whole day and the end it came down abruptly, In past also she had fever few times but when we gave paracetamol fever usually goes down but this time it never went down, that is why we were worried. Is this common in viral infection?

I'll make sure she gets adequate fluid and observe urine as well.

Thanks
