Why Is Insulin Given After A Fracture?

Question: My husband has been in the hospital for a fractured T12 and also had a pace maker put in .... HE IS NOT DIABETIC, but since he is in the hospital they have put him on insulin. WHY?
Brief Answer:
Not due to diabetes.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The stress due to the injury can cause a metabolic imbalance causing the blood glucose levels to rise. In such cases few doses of insulin help to bring down the raised glucose levels back to normal.
Please do not worry. This is not indicative of diabetes. This can happen due to stress.
