Why Is Hemoglobin Tested While Experiencing Intermittent Stabbing Pain In The Anus, Blood In Stool And Churning Discomfort In The Lower Abdomen?

Question: Hi, I'm mainly writing this to consider whether to go back to the doctor and needed an opinion. For the past few months I've had some blood in my stool, which has been confirmed though an occult test. This blood however, isn't usually visable on the stool, but start seeing blood when I wipe. This blood is red in colour, although poo can become darker if I haven't went in a while. I also rarely get a sharp stabbing pain in my bum, and I get a churning feeling in my lower stomach, a similar feeling you get when you have diarrhea. I've had a rectal examination of the finger twice, which they said felt fine. I've also had a blood test, testing for hemoglobin which came back as satisfactory. They think it's probably piles or an anal fissure. I was just curious as to what this hemogoblin test was testing for, and should I wait and see if it stops bleeding, or should I go back to the doctor? Thank you

Hello,
I have viewed your attachment and there is definitely some blood there but it is probably from some internal hemorrhoids. Hemoglobin tests to see if you have lost enough blood to be anemic. It sounds like you are fine in that area.
If you had a fissure the doctor should have been able to see that, but they cannot always see or feel internal hemorrhoids.
I suggest that you push the fluids. Avoid caffeine and alcohol (they are dehydrating), add fiber supplements or increase your intake or fresh fruits and vegetables and see if this does not clear up over the next few weeks.
If not then see a doctor again.
It is extremely unlikely that it is anything serious at your age.

There are many causes for blood in stool but the most likely cause at your age is a hemorrhoid. Because you are having some pain with this then I suggest that you see a doctor to make sure there is no infection or a thrombosed hemorrhoid.

Hello again, this bleeding has been happening since January 2018, and was wondering if it was a normal occurance for hemorrhoids to last this long? :)

Hemorrhoids can last quite a long time. This is especially true if they happen to be thrombosed. In that case it would need to be removed for quicker resolution. The other consideration is that there may be some sort of infection going on. This is why it would be a really good idea for you to see if position for an exam.
