Brief Answer:
Can be an injury or inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain and swelling in the toe can be due to an ill fitting shoe or injury in the area or an inflammation of the joint. Rest, ace bandage, hot compress, keeping the foot elevated while resting and a mild pain killer will help. You can start taking ibuprofen and see if it helps in reducing the pain. Avoid wearing tight fitting shoes and avoid all the painful movements of the toe. Any bone injury can be ruled out after an X-ray of the affected area. In case the pain and swelling aggravates then do consult your orthopedician for a few investigations.

In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Infection is less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The antibiotic will help only if there is an infection. An infection can be confirmed only after a direct examination. Do consult your physician for proper prescriptions.
