Question: Once every few days, my knee cap makes a clicking sound. My body reacts to it and there is pain when it happens. After 15 seconds, it is all fine. Is this a problem ? What can I do to reduce this problem. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to osteoarthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The clicking sound of the knee cap with pain can happen due to degenerative changes in the knee joint like osteoarthritis. An X-ray of the knee joint will help in detecting any such changes.
To reduce such happening it is best to start with joint lubricant supplements like chondroitin sulfate or glucosamine. Regular exercises to strengthen muscles around the knee joint will also help.

Thank you for your response.
Also is cooling or icing the knee cap good? I do recumbent bike 4 times a week 30 minutes each. Do the cooling on those days ? stop it after say 1 month or continue doing it.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Hot compress is a better option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Doing a hot compress is better than a cold compress or icing. You can do a hot compress daily once and do it twice or thrice on the days you are doing biking. This will help in decreasing the discomfort if there is any. You can also do quadriceps drill to reduce the problem.
Hope this answer is helpful.

Thanks for your reply.
How do I reduce inflammation in the knee? Will hot compress do it. With exercise and normal walking, I think there may be some inflammation.
Thanks.
