Why There Was Brown Discharge After Intercourse ?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Feb 2025
Question: My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex last night, I'm on birth control currently, and when we were finished, there was brown discharge. Also, I have little spotting in my underwear after that. It's 11 days until my cycle begins. I was just curious as to what it could be.

Hi staffordrose,
Thank you for the query.I have read it&understood your concern.
When you are taking contraceptive pill regularly...the bleeeding you had after the unprotected sex can be due to,
-Physical friction trauma following vigerous sexual act .If it's moderate degreee.(restricted to spotting only)..would stop within few hours....only thing you need to do is to maintain genital hygiene.
But if the bleeding continues more than 24 hours&soaks pads along with pain in lower abdomen& vagina..it would need medical attention...visit your gynecologist for internal check up.(to exclude tear, cervical polyp etc) followed by specific management.
-But if you had missed taking a pill ...this can be withdrawal of hormones inbuilt in pill leading to bleeding .
-In case you are on progesteron only(single hormone pill)..such bleeding could be side effect of the pill.
* Considering all of above possibilities..you need not be stressed immediately.Wait &watch the bleeding /keep good vaginal hygiene...avoid doushing/Drink plenty of water.
-Mostly bleeding would stop on its own.
-If it does not&is considerate amount to soak a pad &lasts for more than 24 hours...consult your gynecologist(as suggested earlier)
I hope that helps.Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.

There isn't enough bleeding to fill the pad. And I did miss taking the pill once or twice.

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Stafordrose4,
Thanks for the follow up query.
It seems you had sex around 14 days before your expected period. that was time for ovulation,&if you had missed your two pills consequently...it's likely that you might have ovulated.
Still, the bleeding you have can not suggest pregnancy...it seems to be either withdrawal or tissue trauma during sex.
In such condition, it's better to wait for normal periods for 11 days....in case of 8 days delay in periods ,go for home pregnancy test(-ve test excludes pregnancy&you can safely wait for normal periods )A +be test indicates pregnancy &you need to terminate it earliest..in order to avoid fetal malformations&abnormality(due to intake of pills while you had conceived)
I hope you understand .Any more doubt you have..a follow up query is welcome.
Thanks
