Why Would I Experience Hearing Loss While Treating Fever Due To Prostate Infection?
Question: i was diagnosed as having prostate infection and after the first course of antibiotics, i was still having fever and doxycycline was prescribe. After about the second day my hearing was far less effective. At the moment i am worried about permanent hearing impairment. Should I discontinue using the doxycycline or is there little chance it is causing my hearing issues? My fever has reduced to sub 100 degree levels.
Brief Answer:
not a known side effect
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
There are some medications that are known to be ototoxic including some antibiotics but in general the tetracycline family of antibiotics (which includes doxycycline) is not usually ototoxic.
The antibiotic vancomycin and those belonging to the aminoglycoside family of drugs are the ones that are usually ototoxic.
Though persons can react differently to medication, doxycycline is not known to have this effect.
You should see an ENT doctor re your hearing loss. Acute hearing loss should be assessed.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
