Question: Wife is pregnant and we are traveling via plane. Is there anything we can be doing to keep her as safe as possible and is it ok for her to be traveling? We plan to go unless it is a hard no from a doctor.

Air travel is quite safe in pregnancy prior to 37 weeks of gestation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
Welcome to the "Ask a Doctor "service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

Air travel is quite safe in pregnancy prior to 37th week of gestation though long flights should be avoided.
This applies to the patients who have a normal pregnancy with out any complications and with no bad obstetric history (Pregnancy wastages in the past).

As such, there are no specific precautions but the patients should keep themselves well hydrated by taking plenty of water and oral fluids.
Pregnancy causes a physiological thickening of blood (Hyper coagulation) and pooling of blood in lower limbs due to long sittings might increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
She can also use compression stockings.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.

I feel you are talking in general terms of traveling during pregnancy. I am asking about traveling during a pandemic. Which we are currently in. And am leaving California and headed to the east coast. What are your thoughts on this?

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

In the globally evolving situation of COVID 19,if the air travel can be avoided,it should be.
Elderly, immunological compromised, kidney transplant patients, pregnant females and children constitute the vulnerable group and need extra care and precautions.
Even if your wife has to move out for travel, she should wear a N-95 Mask, use hand gloves, do repeated hand washing, use an alcohol based sanitizer, maintain social distancing and avoid crowded places.

Healthy living.
Warm regards.
