Will An Ultrasound Scan Detect A Cone Pelvis?
Question: my daughter is 5 days overdue with her first baby. I have a cone pelvis and wondered if a scan could determine if my daughter has as well. I don't want her to go through the trauma that I did and almost losing my first child. she did ask the drs after she first fell pregnant but said she didn't need an xray and I want to know if a scan at this stage would be able to tell
Brief Answer:
An ultrasound scan will not help.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
An ultrasound scan cannot detect a cone pelvis. Rather a per vaginal examination can assess the adequacy of pelvis for a normal delivery.
Ultrasound scan only helps in the assessment of the baby and other soft tissues. The shape of the bones can only be determined after an X-ray.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

thank you for your prompt reply. my daughter has another anti-natal appointment in two days. should she ask for a scan to see if the baby's cord is free from around his neck. she is carrying very high still and the dr gave her a stretch and sweep 3 days ago in hoping to get her into labour. would the dr have known if her pelvis is actually cone shaped from doing this? nothing has happened and she has not dropped at all. they are planning to induce her in 5 days if nothing has improved which will make her 10 days over. is it likely that the reason nothing is happening is perhaps the cord is indeed around the baby's neck.

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes. An ultrasound scan will help in ruling out any cord around the baby's neck. Before a stretch and sweep a pelvic assessment is done to rule out any cone shaped pelvis. The doctor would have known if any such problem were present. Sometimes the onset of labor can happen even two weeks after the due date. It is not necessary that a cord around the neck is the reason for it.
Hope my answer is helpful.
