Will Rubella Positive With High Avidity Cause Problems In Pregnancy?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
EXPLAINED...in detail...whats the IgM levels?
Detailed Answer:
hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
You are presently at 16 weeks + 4 days with IgG rubella positive which indicates an old infection. But equally important is the IgM levels also.
An avidity test if is again high indicates an old infection prior to pregnancy and hence it should not be affecting the pregnancy at all.
The titres should be measured 3 weekly hence as precaution.
Levl 2 scan would be done in another week between 18-20 weeks which shall indicate if tehre has been any congenital anomaly due to rubella morphologically.
Else you may opt for amniocentesis to confirm IgM rubella antibodies in the fetal amniotic fluid which if high shall indicate that the baby is infected and shall require termination.
Otherwise , if IgM is negative then a conservative approach may be adopted hence of observation and screening depending on the amniocentesis, level 2 scan and 3 weekly titres reports hence.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If IgM is negative then its not a recent infection at all and IgG antibodies have been formed in the body following old infection probably before pregnancy and hence shouldn't affect the foetus .
However a surveillance protocol as mentioned should be followed ---
amniocentesis, level 2 anomaly scan and 3 weekly titres.
Pregnancy can be legally terminated till 20 weeks of pregnancy and anytime if the foetus is abnormal. So go through the screening and relax, chances are unlikely that foetus should be affected with congenital rubella syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, the IgG and IgM tests would have to be repeated 3 weekly hence. As the major organ formation take place in the first 12 weeks , hence if amniocentesis and level2 scan comes out to be normal , then likely that the baby is safe.
