Will The Radiologist Perform Ultrasound For A Bloated Abdomen. Will The Doctor Be Present During The Procedure?

Question: When doing an emergency ultrasound for a bloated abdomen, will the radiologist perform the procedure? And if so, will your attending doctor be present or will the radiologist just give your doctor the results?
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
When emergency ultrasound is performed at ER settings, it can be carried out by an emergency physician or an ultrasound technologist, depending on the time of the day as well as the policies of the particular hospital. The images can then be preliminarily interpreted by the emergency physician at spot (e.g. if it is late night and there is no time to get the images to the radiologist on call) or by the radiologist. If this is an emergency investigation, the radiologist receives a special "STAT" note for this test.
Presence of the attending physician is something totally optional: s/he may or may not be present.

What if the patient doesn't go to the ER but sees their family doctor? Will the family doctor perform the ultrasound or radiologist?
If this is done at family doctor's office, this is not considered emergency. In North XXXXXXX doctors usually do not perform ultrasound examination - the procedure itself is performed by a technologist.
So, the family doctor will refer you for the ultrasound, technologist will perform it, then the radiologist will read it and will forward the report to the family doctor.
