Hi and Welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.
Thanks for sharing your question with us here.
I have read your question and here is my advice.

Yes, low iron causes high platelet count. Your ferritin is quite low indicating iron deficiency. This may lead to iron deficiency anaemia. And studies have shown that if iron is low in our body it can stimulate the production of platelets hence causing high platelets count, though this is not a common finding.

Our platelet level has got quite a broad normal range that is from 150 000/ml to 450 000/ml and high platelets are common and mostly not a serious concern until its very high and persistent. You could share with us as for how high were your platelets, but it's possible with low ferritin.

There are other causes like infection, stress, or. Bleeding that can cause a temporary rise in platelets.

I think we should more focus on the low ferritin, to sort out the cause of low iron and hence manage accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query.
Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions or concerns.

Kind Regards

I sadly don't know the exact number; the nurse just said my platelets were high. I had also exercised a couple of hours before going in to get my blood drawn, and I'm on the birth control patch. Could either of those factors contribute to high platelets?

Brief Answer:
Yes both can contribute.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for writing back to us..
While potentially both exercise and contraceptive hormones can cause a rise in platletes count. And this has been demonstrated in multiple studies that exercise can bring a significant increase in platletes count specially if the exercise is unaccustomed., similarly contraceptive hormones do raise the count.
However iron deficiency is a more importnat cause of high platletes.
Important thing to know is that some rise in platelets is not concerning. Our platelets count do transiently get rise for many reason as discussed above. But they come come back to normal in few days. This is a reactionary change most of the times.
However if the platletes count is very high, like it is over 10 lack, (normal is from 1.5 lack To 4 lack per ml) or if it is persistently over 6 lack then we take it serious, otherwise high platletes count most of the times is not a concern. And in your case, there are many reasons that can raise the number like the low ferretin, exercise, and hormones. It's not necessary that these would raise but they can raise the counts. So you don't need to be too concerned.
You may just ask them if how much was the count, and if was too high, you can repeat the count.
Hope its helps you understand your query. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any further questions or concerns.
