Would A Septum Perforation Heal On Its Own?
I’ve got a hole in my septum from habitually picking at a cold sore wound for months!
I’ve stopped touching it for a week but I’m unsure if it’s healing up and am terrified that it’ll get bigger. It’s the size of a hole made by a hole punch.
I’ve been putting Manuka honey on it and cool boiled water with rock salt.
If I leave it, will it ever heal. I know the hole won’t close but will the skin heal around it?!
Thank you.
The septum perforation will not heal itself, a physical exam is needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The hole in the septum or perforated septum is caused by many factors. Trauma and infection are common causes. If the hole in the septum is already created it can not be healed itself. This is because the perforation is located in the cartilage of the septum and the healing process can be very difficult.
The treatment consists only in surgery.
This treatment is recommended only if a patient has symptoms. If the patient does not have symptoms you can post pointing the surgical intervention. A physical examination is needed to precisely confirm if the surgery is needed.
Meanwhile, I suggest you use saline nasal sprays. I also suggest you to use ointments to keep the area hydrated.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards
I intend to see my general practitioner some time this week but as I’m in the UK, a referral to an ENT specialist may take some time.
If I use saline drops in the meantime, is it less likely to break down? I’m terrified that my whole nose will collapse.
Thank you.
You should use saline nasal drops to prevent further complications.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
You can use saline nasal drops without any worry. It is less like to break down. It will also help in preventing complications of the perforation such as infection and hemorrhage. You can also use an ointment to hydrate the area.
Some other suggestions are:
- Not lifting heavy things
- Not blowing the nose
Hope it helps.
