Would You Recommend Surgery Or Any Other Recommendations My Daughter Has A Fracture Of The 5th Metatarsal Bone Has Not Healed In 8 Months?

Question: My daughter has a fracture of the 5th metatarsal bone in her foot. This fracture has not completely closed. Her dr. said surgery was up to her. She has worn a boot for 8mo. Now she isn't wearing the boot. Some days her foot feels ok but other days it hurts. Would you recommend surgery or do you have any other recommendations. If she does nothing do you think the fracture will eventually close on it's own?

Brief Answer:
Surgery can heal the fracture.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A fracture of 5th metatarsal bone that has not healed in 8 months is not likely to heal on its own. But the fracture itself should not interfere in her routine daily activities except for pain.
Surgery is the best way to heal the fracture and be free from any pain.
I hope this answers your query.

Is placing a screw in the bone the best solution for stability? How long would healing require? She has also done bone stimulation to this also with no luck. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Fixation with screw will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
A screw or plate will help in fixing the fracture site. It will provide adequate stability to the bone. The healing can take 6-8 weeks after the surgery.
But she can bear weight on the foot after 2 weeks of surgery. The bone will gradually heal on its own.
Hope my answer is helpful.
