Yesterday I Fell And Sprained My Ankle In Dance Class.

Question: Yesterday I fell and sprained my ankle in dance class. The day before I had a little bit of pain in that same area. My question is I have os trigonom syndrome in that exact same foot. Are the two coorelated in any way?
Brief Answer:
There is some relation between the two
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service,
A very important relation between os trigonum syndrome and ankle sprain is that both are more common in people who use this joint most as it happens with dancers.
So, the dancing classes make ankle sprains more likely and os trigonum syndrome as well.
Another possible relationship among the two is that injury from ankle sprain may cause os trigonum syndrome, so previous ankle sprain might have contributed to the development of os trigonum syndrome.
I hope this answers to your query.

The sprain I had 6 years ago was also much worse than this one. I couldn't stably walk.

Thank you so much! This is starting to make sense now. I actually got an ankle sprain 6 years ago on the same leg. It's possible this sprain prevented my ankle bones from fusing. My other question is...I'm thinking of getting os trigonom surgery but I was wondering how long the recovery time would be and the possible side effects. Please let me know :)

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Following surgery for os trigonum you may need 2-3 months to be able to normally use the ankle and probably a bit longer if you would like to start dancing.
Sometimes a cast is put on the ankle joint and weight is not encouraged the first week (you will be walking on crutches to avoid putting weight on that foot). After the first week you may start to bear some weight on that foot through the cast which will be in place for a few weeks. After the cast is removed a special type of boot might be given to support the ankle.
Exercises are recommended but it is best to be lead by a physiotherapist for a better result.
So, if you decide to go for surgery, it will take you around 3 months to be able to normally start your daily activities and probably a bit longer for more use of the ankle.
I hope this answers to your query.
