Yesterday At My OB/GYN’s Office, I Was Giving A Urine

default

Question: Yesterday at my OB/GYN’s office, I was giving a urine sample (I am 30 weeks pregnant). To my horror, after I wiped, I noticed two TINY red streaks the size of eyelashes on the corner of the toilet paper - it was 100% not my blood, and must have been from the person who used the bathroom before me. I mentioned it to the Midwife, but she did not seem concerned and advised she would just change the roll of toilet paper. I know it was not mine, because that area of the toilet paper was still dry. Am I at risk now for Hep B, Hep C, or HIV? I can’t stop worrying about it.

Brief Answer:
Low risk of hep B, C or HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome 'Ask A Doctor' service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I don't think you are at risk of being infected by hepatitis B, C or HIV because of this exposure.

The very tiny blood spot you saw on toilet paper didn't contact your mucosal lining because that part of the paper was dry so you didn't have contact with it.

Also, HIV doesn't exist in dried blood and it is dead as soon as it gets to dry air.
Hepatitis B is more resistant to dried blood but I suppose you are already vaccinated to it and so you can't contract it. Hepatitis C also is more resistant but it has low chances of being transmitted sexually.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
