they will have a shower but not take their clothes into thw wash nor wipe the wet floor, even though theyve been asked to EVERY time.
Eating food on table, but theyll leave their plates on the table and take off into their room and play their devices. its liek my kids are constantly told but can bever just %E2%80%9Cget it%E2%80%9D
without being told. they are so freakn forgetful. they hate studying because i feel that if somethign is too hard theyll do eberything else but what they shoukd be doing. they go to thw toilet but dont wash their hands.
its like laziness but im sire there is a real reason for all this, no normal kid would have to be asked this kany times and still not get it? its like they cant connect the dots!
thyre impatient kids
there needs to be a reward for everythinn otherwise they just wont do it.

Psychometric assessment needed
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for using the Ask a Doctor service.
I have gone through the details and it is indeed possible that your children have ADHD. They need to undergo psychometric evaluation to determine whether they have it and what associated problems are present alongside. ADHD can run in families and it is possible that you have it as well. There is nothing to be ashamed of. Rather, you along with your children need to visit a psychologist and get behavioral therapy done and that will enable you to deal with the issues. Certain medications might be needed for your children. However, this can only be determined after the evaluation.
I can assure you that this is a treatable condition and although you might have struggled with these issues throughout, you can make things a lot easier for your children.

Yes I understand. I’m constantly frustrated over these little details as I don’t know how many times I have to ask?
The repeating, the forgetful, the lack of focus and organisation is all so obvious. Can you clarify something though.
My children can actually act very well behaved in front of other people, so the hyperactivity right now isn’t really there. Can it be possible to have just internal issues? Rather than external. Such as executive planning etc? They try very hard, but there is also so much inconsistencies, as when things become harder they tend to forget what they should be doing. And it’s a cycle yet again.
My kids haven’t been assessed yet, but what assessment needs to take place?
Also, I am very afraid that my kids will become med addicts! As they get older they may not even remember to take their medication because they are that forgetful. I feel they can “cope” without meds, if that makes sense. Can you recommend any natural supplements for ADHD? Or medication from a psyc that have minimal side effects?

Thanks for writing back.
The forgetfulness, lack of focus, lack of organisation, all could point to adult ADHD and that is the reason that I asked you to seek the assistance of a psychologist. They would be able to offer valuable tips that will help you cope better.
Regarding your children, possibly they have the same issues that you have, even if they are not that apparent. These are indeed internal issues but that does not mean that they should be left just like that. Please do not assume that your children would become med addicts. Do you ever consider yourself to be oxygen addict, water addict or food addict as you cannot do without them? Well, it does not work that way. What needs to be given, needs to be given. It is possible that with proper cognitive behavioral therapy they would eventually be able to do even without medication, but that does not mean that you should not give medication when they actually need it. Leave this judgment on a psychiatrist. Please go for the assessment and things can be taken up as per the reports.
Omega 3 fatty acids as in Cod liver oil capsules (or fish oils overall) are a natural supplement that can help with ADHD.

Thanks so much.
I do appreciate this. The thing is, my children are very intelligent kids, and they are good at everything they have ever tried in their lives.. to mention a few. My son was a head boy last year, and has won every sport and academic Como you can imagine, my daughter is very competitive in her national gym league. So I always almost think they don’t have ADHD... the thing is, if we find out they both have ADHD and they are offered medication, is there a way I’d “lose” my kids to medication? In other words, will they still have the same character but with only better organisation/planning and perhaps motivation? Can you please tell me if you ever come across anyone that has really had bad side effects to ADHD medication? And are there good news stories as well?
Also, is procrastination and not not wanting to do homework “because it’s too hard” a classic sign of ash’s as well?
Please can you guide me on who I need to see first? A paed? psyciatrist?

Psychometric evaluation should help
Detailed Answer:
It would be worth getting the test done. Even if your children test negative for ADHD, it would be reassuring to know that they don't. Any medicines (even herbal) can have side effects but if applied correctly, side effects are unlikely. In any case, medicines are prescribed only when the risk benefit ration seems to be in favor. I have prescribed ADHD medication to a significant number of my patients and most of them have done well. In the ones in whom side effects have been observed, changing over to an alternative agent has usually resolved the issue. These children usually do dramatically well on medication.
Procrastination is not a sign of ADHD.
You should see either a psychologist (who will get the assessment done) and then a psychiatrist (who will see if medication is required).
