No trial has confirmed the role of serotonin or Famotidine in COVID19
Detailed Answer:
Hi.....
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.
I am Dr Ajeet XXXXXXX
I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.
Decreased Serotonin (5HT) levels have been associated with pathophysiology of depression.
Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are the group of drugs which are used to increase their levels in brain thus improving the symptoms of depression and causing mood elation.
An abnormal increase in the serotonin levels is also harmful.
It causes Serotonin syndrome.
Serotonin syndrome is a group of symptoms that occurs with the use of certain serotonergic medications or drugs and symptoms include hyperthermia(high body temperature),irritability, agitation, increased reflexes, tremors, sweating, confusion, dilated pupilspalpitation and diarrhea.
Till now, there has not been any indication that COVID 19 has any causual association with serotonin and it's receptors.
After all, this is a 4-5 months old virus and We don't know much about it.
This was a zoonotic which used to infect animals, mutated and typically started to infect humans in Wuhan,China.
There are many studies going on to search for an effective way to treat COVID 19.
This includes Azithromycin,HydroxyChloroquin, ascorbic acid,Oseltamivir(used to treat Swine flu),antiretroviral drugs (used to treat HIV),BCG Vaccine etc.
This includes Famotidine which is an antiulcer drug.
It was seen that many corona survivors had taken antiulcer drugs for hyperacidity.
But till now,not even preliminary results have been out and it will require many more studies and clinical trials to validate anything.
Hope that I have answered your query.
Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
