Question: does propranolol cause a rise in blood sugar
Brief Answer:
about beta blockers and hypoglycemia
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking! There are many studies that confirm that Propranolol can cause hypoglycemia in patients with type Diabetes, and a hypoglycemic event can last longer with propranolol. The mechanism involved is the inhibition of hepatic gluconeogenesis.

I asked you if propranolol or beta blockers in general raised blood sugar and you told me that they could lower blood pressue which i found out for myself. I looked up on the computer and looked up a site for medication induced type 2 diabetes and beta blockers was one of the drugs which could raise blood sugar
Brief Answer:
Beta blockers and blood sugar
Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Yes, you are right.
Most of the studies confirms that Beta-blockers can cause problems with low blood glucose (hypoglycemia), not high blood glucose. A few studies confirm the contrary.
Beta-blockers cause these two problems in distinct ways. First, they may harm a person’s ability to recognize and respond to low blood glucose, mainly by keeping the heart rate slow, which can dampen symptoms of hypoglycemia. They may also inhibit the release of glucose from the liver.
But beta-blockers also block the release of insulin by interacting with nerve signals to the pancreas and can thus lower insulin levels even when blood glucose is high, increasing the blood sugar.
We usually aware our patient that beta blockers can cause hypoglycemic evetns.
Hope this makes it clear.
