default
Posted on Thu, 12 Dec 2019
Question: everywhere denoted with a black x is a pressure point (see attached picture). it is sore to the touch. some of those points have a shooting pain that comes and goes a few times per day.

background: i went to the primary doctor for chest and rib pain. at the time it was mostly rib pain. The doctor gave a physical exam, chest x ray PROCEDURE: XR CHEST PA LAT CHEST (CPT=71046), bloodwork and ecg. nothing remarkable in the results.

doctor stated it could be costochondritis. gave a prescription for an antiinflammatory. i havent taken yet as im getting over a viral infection and im taking plenty of meds for that.

1. based on the location of the pain shown by the pics. is this really locations for costochondritis?
2. is there anything else it could be or i should look out for?
3. what other tests can be run ? and what type of specialist should i see if any?
4. what treatment in the interim?

Brief Answer:
Costochondritis possible, no other examinations needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I see the photo you attached where you have put the x-signs and the place is typical for costochondritis.
You are having a viral infection and costochondritis commonly occurs while suffering a viral respiratory infections because of the inflammation of costochondral junctions from the viral infection itself or from the strain of coughing.
You have done all the examinations possible that I could have given in this case a x-ray suspecting a pneumonia (taking count of the cold symptoms you are having), ECG suspecting any heart issues.
Once excluded those suspected diagnoses, since the x-ray and ECG were normal, the only probable diagnosis is costochondritis.
I don't think you may need to do other tests or see any specialits.
Wait for the viral infection to go and this pain may subside too.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
