Good Morning Dr. S, My Question Pertains To A Healthy
my question pertains to a healthy diet to lose weight and not sacrifice, muscle mass or bone density mass....with all of the confusing information out there........how much protein is REALLY needed per day? I have tried a high protein low carb and low fat diet and not lose weight, I have tried a high fat, mod protein and low carb diet and not lose weight...and I have tried a high carb, low protein low fat diet and DID lose weight (all types was a calorie deficit)...therefore I am confused, also what causes triglyceride levels to increase? I weight train 2x/week and walk 3 to 4x per week
thx in advance, XXXXXXX
You need 1.2 gr of protein per kg of body weight.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
You normally need to consume 0.8 grams of protein per kg of body weight. In order to lose weight you should increase muscle mass and in order to increase muscle mass you need to take 1.2 to 1.7 gr of protein per kg.
I would suggest you to follow Dr Dukan's diet which is a diet with large amount of proteins moderate fats and low sugar.
The increased triglycerides can be caused by fatty rich foods you may be using.
I think you are having a good physical activity regime and you should keep increasing intensity gradually.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
