We think the cause maybe a variety of shellfish we had at a restaurant last Friday -including oysters
Not sure if this is the norovirus or food posoisoning from shellfish or both
Gastroenteritis.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query my dear patient,
Have seen your details.
Most likely you both are having gastroenteritis.Gastroenteritis causes inflammation in intestines therefore every moment of intestine would cause pain or spasm. As intestines are inflamed large amount of mucous would be secreted along with improper water absorption causing stools to be watery. Along with water large amount of electrolytes like sodium and potassium are lost hence causing severe fatigue bodyaches etc.
Main stay of treatment is fluid resuscitation and electrolyte repletion
So what i would suggest you is to get Electral/ORS solution from local store/pharmacy and give him at least 200ml every hour.
Tab imodium 4mg thrice daily to stop stools. If they are still watery. Its over the counter.Things would be much better after 2nd dose.
Any probiotic can be taken twice daily. You can take VSL#3 Twice daily.
Till now its was all over the counter.
For differentiating if it's caused by bacteria or virus stool routine and microscopy test has to be done. Stool sample of both would be checked under microscope.
If positive for Amoeba or Bacteria prescription medicines like
Cefiximine 200mg twice daily
Metronidazole 400mg thrice daily(would cover bacteria and protozoans also) would be given for 3 days.
Keep a watch on blood pressure and pulse.
If pulse is more then 110/minute or Upper blood pressure is less then 100mm of hg shift to the nearest emergency room.
Regards.
