Hello, I Am 28 And Have Two Children Ages 7and

Question: hello, I am 28 and have two children ages 7and 9. my husband has noticed "something pointy" in my vagina. I checked it out myself in the shower and I believe my cervix has become misshaped. I know it's supposed to be small and dome-like with a hole in the center. mine has a hole but the left side of my cervix feels like it's too long. I am able to touch my cervix with my second knuckle being as far as I can go. I am concerned I am prolapsing and worried I won't be able to have another child. I work two jobs and I do a lot of walking in both jobs and I'm concerned this could worsen it. I made an appointment with a planned Parenthood clinic on the 9th of this month and concerned that it'll worsen before then. should I stop sexual activity? should I go to urgent care right away? or an emergency room?

Brief Answer:
This sounds most likely to be cervical prolapse.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. I would suspect that you are right about having cervical prolapse. It is a relatively common condition, especially in women you have had multiple vaginal deliveries. Along with the bulging or pressure symptoms that you describe, women often have urinary problems as well, usually leaking urine with stress such as lifting or coughing.

Cervical prolapse is a condition that develops gradually, so I wouldn't be too concerned about getting seen right away, your appointment on the 9th would be fine. Walking and sexual activity are not risk factors for this condition, so I wouldn't be concerned about that either.

Management usually starts with reducing risk factors such as being overweight, and preventing constipation. Conservative treatment usually begins with pessaries (a medical device that is placed in the vagina to help support the pelvic organs), pelvic floor exercises, and estrogen therapy. If it continues to worsen, surgery can be considered.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
