Question: hello I was wondering about acute hepatitis B. They say 90% of adults will fight off this infection. Does this mean they will test negative after infection and no longer carry the virus? Or are they still "carriers"?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. Hope I can be of help for you today. If you have hepatitis B infection less than 6 months we call it an acute infection. In this time your immune system can fight against and clear acute hepatitis B from your body, and should recover completely within a few months. During acute infection if your body is strong you can fight against hepatitis B infection and develop to have hepatitis B antibody, you are not a carrier. But if your body can not fight against hepatitis B infection after 6 months it will become a chronic infection. In this time hepatitis B may last a long lifetime and you can be a carrier in this case. But its not meant that you are clear from hepatitis B infection. You need to follow up with your doctor regularly to do blood tests and liver ultrasound to prevent complications of hepatitis B infection.

I hope that It can help you, and please let me know if you have any clarification or question about that, and I would be welcome to discuss it with you further. I hope you have good health.

Best regards,

thank you for your response I have a few follow up questions. 1. if I was exposed to hepatitis b is it possible to fight it off before it is able to show up on a blood test? 2. and when you say "but it's not meant that you are clear from hepatitis B infection" does this mean only if it becomes a chronic infection? and acute infection does clear? 3. Also what foods or supplements can I take to help fight off this infection? 4. Any other things I can do to fight off infection?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you again for your question. 1 Hepatitis b infection should be shown in blood 1week to 10 weeks.2 Chronic hepatitis infection, blood tests stay positive antigen but some patients have no symptoms or indication of treatment. 3. During you have acute hepatitis you should take care of your liver by avoiding alcohol, stop smoking, eat healthy foods, avoid greasy or fatty food, and sleep enough. 4. There is nothing you can take to assure that your hepatitis should be recovered after you get infection. It depends on your own body's fight against the hepatitis B virus. If you have hepatitis b infection you can follow up your blood test with your doctor.
Wish you have good health. Let me know if I can assist you further.
