Brief Answer:
Hyperthyroidism is generally autoimmune.

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, hyperthyroidism is a state of overactive thyroid. it can be due to nodules in the gland, where we refer it as toxic nodular gland. it can be due to autonomous enlargement of the gland which leads to overactive gland. this is graves' disease. it can be a temporary phase of overactive gland due to infection ie thyroiditis.
diagnosis needs to be confirmed as the treatment differs in all three. prognosis is good in all three of managed rightly.
regards!
