Question: hello doctor! u am writing because of my daughter of 5 years old. last summer she suffered from sun allergy. in fact I have not visited her since I didn't go to much to the beach but she began having litle hives, rush and a lot of itch. I am allergic to the sun also and the first thing I thought it was that she has the same problem like me. Now days is happening again. When she is exposed to the sun she began having itch and the skin very red. today she was playing to the park and immediately started having this kind of problems. I am very preoccupied because I reas something about lupus. might this be correlated? I suffer from hashimoto. what kind of exams should I do to her? should I go to the pediatrian or sound doctor? Thank you

Brief Answer:
NOt Lupus...Likely sunburns. Need sunscreen!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

The rash of lupus is on face, cheeks and bridge of the nose, commonly referred to as butterfly rash. At her age, this is highly unlikely. She needs to keep away from sun and when very necessary, she should use sunscreen lotion for protection. This is sunburn and protective clothings can help.

I will not recommend testing for Lupus at this time. However, dsDNA, ANA, ESR, CRP, antiphospholipid antibodies, etc.

I hope this guides and helps. I wish you and your daughter well. Keep me updated and feel free to request for more information and clarifications if need be.
