Question: hello. for the past week or so, ive had a gnawing, stabbing sonetimes burning pain just to the left of my sternum, not far from the center of the chest and right below the collarbone area but above the nipple.

i went to the ER for it and they did cardiac enzyme blood work, ekg and chest xray. all normal.

the pain isnt going away. im under a ton of stress and have panic disorder. i carry all my stress in my cheat and shoulders and theyre often in pain but this is very specific.

i can always point to the exact spot where it hurts and if i press down on it and irritate the area, it gets worse and the pain spreads.

what could this be?

thanks

Thanks for your question on Ask a doctor forum.
I can understand your concern.
I have gone through the detailed history you have given.
Since all your cardiac reports are normal, no need to worry for heart diseases related chest pain.
Your pain is worsening by pressure, this is suggestive of musculoskeletal pain.
So apply ice packs on affected areas of chest.
Avoid movements causing pain.
Avoid heavyweight lifting and strenuous exercise.
Take painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs like ibuprofen and thiocolchicoside.
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
