Question: hello i am a 25 year old male. I have a clean medical history with no history of major illness or diseases. For about a week now i have had a swollen submandibular gland on the right side of my jaw. My PCP prescribed anti biotics and anti imflamitory but have had no luck in getting the swelling down. Ive had a strep test, been to the dentist the other day and no one found any infections in me. I pushed for my PCP to send me to a ENT and i made an appointment for next week. I also have TMJ which just recently flared up again and i am having tje usual jaw tenderness and tightness i get with that. i want to trust my PCP and belive i am just fighting some type of infection but i am terrified i have cancer. I got an ultrasound on it and theu found no tumor and said that everything looked fine, just a swollem gland. Does anyone have any experiemce in dealing with this that could possibly help me out? i want the ENT to do a biopsy on it if its still there when i go next week.

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Could be Sub mandibular gland sialadenitis or lymphadenitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

According to the description given by you, I am of the opinion that you may be having either sub-mandibular gland sialadenitis or acute lymphadenitis of the lymph node in the sub-mandibular region.

Sialadenitis is the inflammation of the salivary gland. This happens when an individual consumes less than adequate water. Dehydration causes stasis of the saliva in the duct, thus inducing a temporary block and inflammation of the gland.

Also, there can be an inflamed lymph node in the submandibular area due to the infection/inflammation in the oral cavity or in the tongue causing enlargement of the lymph node. Ultrasound can differentiate between an enlarged lymph node and the salivary gland.

I doubt cancer in your case.

Yes, a Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of the enlarged gland can help in identifying the nature of the disease and throws light on the further management of the same.

Hope this answers your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
