Question: heres my question. my heart is good. I recently had a physical including ekg and echo. all good. so heres my question. almost everytime I go to bed especially after I have over eaten and or had a few drinks, I get palpitations. that makes me nervous and very hard to get to sleep. what is it about over eating and cocktails that causes that. it never happens when I eat light and dont drink. thank you.

Brief Answer:
It could be an acid reflex.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
As the ECG and echo are normal and nothing much to worry.
Most probably is due to severe acid reflux which will become more severe while lying down and after binge eating.
As of now you can take antacids like omeprazole or pantoprazole for symptomatic relief. Take small meals at frequent interval and sleeping at slightly head up position will help to relieve symptoms.
Wishing all the best.
Thanks

Thank you for your prompt answer. May I ask how acid reflux causes my heart to palpitate. Is my esophagus and gut system somehow connected to my heart? Your answer is comforting. I will close out after this. Tyia!

Brief Answer:
Sorry for the delay.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Acid reflex can cause non cardiac chest pain mimicking angina and indirectly cause palpitations.
The primary symptom that acid reflux does cause is a burning pain in the chest and upper abdomen which might cause stress and anxiety which indirectly cause palpitations. In your case your are nervous about the symptoms and which might trigger palpitations.
Certain other factors like caffeine can also stimulate palpitations.
Wishing you good health.
