Question: hi, 57 yo male was in an accident so I have to take blood thinners, blood pressure, statin diuretic. Have been for 8 years. In the last month I have lost the sense of taste especially salt. I mean no taste, very dry mouth and a thick white coating on my tongue. Will be a little over a week until I can see my dr. She thinks it may be a b12 problem

Brief Answer:
Looks like fungal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi and Welcome to "Ask A Doctor" service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
Yes you are right , vit b12 deficiency can cause glossitis that is shiny tongue with some taste loss.Howe'ver I have seen the picture and it more looks like a fungal infection called oral trush. This is moslty not a serious condition and generally need some topical creams .
I would advise you should use anti fungal cream like dektarin cream ( miconazole ) .Apply this to your tongue 3 times .If that's not available you can also use nilstat oral drops 1 ml sips and swallow 4 to 6 times a day .
If you have any suspicion of vit b12 deficiency , you can always take some multivitamin and b complex. No harm in that .
I hope this would settle in few days .Otherwise you need to discuss this with your doctor .I don't think you need to get panic, let's wait for the cream and until you see your doctor .
Hope I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this. kind Regards Dr Rahman.
