Question: hi. i had tonsils out at 14 (due to recurrent infections). im 19 years old and otherwise healthy but worried about covid-19. does my lack of tonsils mean my immune system wont deal with the virus as well and will make me more susceptible to developing pneumonia from coronavirus?

Brief Answer:
This doesn't mean that you will develop pneumonia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

It is a fact that tonsils function as a barrier , preventing the viruses and bacteria from entering the lungs.
The lymph found in them traps them and flushes viruses and bacteria out.
It will be as a protection if you have them but frequent infection may make them necessarily removed.
This doesn't mean that your immune system won't deal well with the virus and will not affect if you will develop pneumonia or not.
You are young and with healthy immunity and removing tonsils is not likely to make your immune system fragile or low and doesn't mean that you will develop bad complications for covid19.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
