Question: hi, i recently was sick with cough, lots of congestion, and eventually a sinus infection. my doctor prescribed amoxicilian for the sinus problem 3 days ago. i am starting to feel better. about 5 days ago (before the antibiotics) i noticed a rash or hives on my elbows and arms. doctor said it could be from the virus. i am concerned because it seems to be spreading and getting worse. its now in several places on my arms and back and elbows snd even on my legs a little bit.

Especially if these lesions also itch, this does look like a case of urticaria, or hives, which are commonly cause by a viral or bacterial infection, which it sounds like you have as well. As long as you aren't also developing any swelling in your lips or throat, or difficulty breathing, it usually isn't a problem and resolves on its own. In the meantime, I would suggest using an antihistamine, such as Claritin or Zyrtec, as well as using hydrocortisone cream on the lesions. I would expect this to help decrease the rash over the next few days, but if it continues to worsen or spread, you may need to be evaluated to confirm this is hives, and if so, be treated with steroid pills to more effectively treat this.
