Hi, Just Wondering What This Means 'hypermobility With A Beighton
Question: hi, just wondering what this means 'hypermobility with a beighton score of 5 out of 9' it was on a letter from a rheumatologist i was seeing. many thanks, Laila
Brief Answer:
See below.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
The Beighton score is a popular screening technique for hypermobility. This is a nine – point scale and requires the performance of 5 maneuvers, four passive bilateral and one active unilateral performance which means the doctor will perform four maneuvers to you and you will do one by yourself.
He will see the mobility of joints. 0 means tight and 9 laxity and a score of 4-9 as representing ligamentous laxity.
So as a conclusion your ligaments are hyperlaxated so they do move more than normal.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

thank you so much for your answer. could this have caused my fibromyalgia? I also have Syringomyelia, (c6) I also have a section in my vertebrate that is fused together. (not through surgery) and I'm wondering if this could have also. Though the Dr mentions in the report everything is normal? Should I get a second opinion by a rheumatologist?if hypermobility means my joints move more than usual does this mean I could break bones more easily or develop osteoarthritis or osteoporosis? (osteoporosis is in my family). should I have a bone scan? Thank you for your help
Brief Answer:
Not osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear and thank you for asking again.
This can't cause anything nor fybromyalgia but it can be a sign of other diseases.
This is more mobility than normal because up to 3 is considered normal.
You can get an opinion by a rheumatologist to evaluate the overall situation.
The joints move more than usual and it is the opposite of developing osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.
I think bone scan can't show much.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best regards.
