Hi, Since Last Sunday - Almost 1 Week Ago, I

Question: hi, since last Sunday - almost 1 week ago, i started to cough, besides my abdominal muscles hurting from coughing, i got a sort of headache (witch I never get, and i mean never). the mucus was always normal not dark or red just more clear than anything else. this coughing comame pretty much all day at every minute or so for the 1st 3-4 days and coughing fits at night especially while sleeping horizontally. so, for the most part of this week, I would wake up while coughing and go sleep on my recliner. I stopped smoking instantly (always a light smoker from age 14 and quit several time for a total of about 10-12 years) and substitute smoking with nicorete gum for now. I also work for a full day with this dude that was coughing like I did one day after. Plus, for a one day period - 7 hours, 1.5 weeks ago , I was exposed to heavy industrial black oil paint. Now on day 5 my coughing has diminished to a few cough per hour. a lot less scary at this point, but last night. i decided to make my bed in my recliner and although, I did some coughing all night, i avoided a heavy coughing fit. Plus I work up at 4:00am (normal for me) with a sore neck and now at 12:04pm my neck is fine. Probably the recliner. so, could it be smoking (yes or no, I have quit prmanantly at this point), could it be the dude with his coughing. could it be the paint, or someting else. I do intent to visit my doctor if this persists. thank you Andre P.S. any questions you have, i will answer truthfully.
Brief Answer:
Do a chest X ray and a Spirometry test

Hello and welcome in HCM
I read carefully all the history you provide. In my opinion I think the exposure to chemical dusts migh have been the trigger factory. Also environment pollution in smokers is more harmful.
However even if your cough is less know discuss with your doctor to order a chest X ray and a Spirometry test for you just for safety.
You should also stop smoking to help with the cough.
I was wondering and f you have gastric reflux too. Because the cough in lying position might be from it.Please discuss for the above with your doctor.
Hope to have been helpful

1- do you consider heavy industrial black oil paint Dust? As I was painting not stripping paint.
2- I don't need to stop smoking, I already did. Sunday May 26th
3- yes, i did have one night of gastric reflux. I would say about May 16, two days after painting. I do have these on occasion - say 2-3 times a year.
yes, this was helpful - My worries are much less.
