How Soon Thyroid Level Be Rechecked If High (7.9) 23

Question: how soon thyroid level be rechecked if high (7.9) 23 yr old daughter w this number month ago and was just notified.depression already.it seems worse.related?

she had depression and ptsd related anxiety for last year due to trauma. in last six weeks has been really sad and depressed (expresslng desire not to be alive, seeking behavioral health care) and we are wondering if hypothyroidism could be making her pre existing mental health worse and whether she should have thyroid checked immediately again or not. last test was about a month ago and she is likely to get another test in 2.5 weeks. she has been a bit less depressed - but not a lot - since discharge from four days of behavioral health inpatient care on December 13. she also is on new antidepressants and it could be that they are not helping yet and may never help but we just learned about the high thyroid test. she is also tired and has gained weight.

Hello and thank you for asking!
I can understand your concern regarding to your daughter's health.
The TSH level is slightly elevated but can not be the cause of a severe depression. It might have caused weight gain.
She should have started levothyroxine after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism and after 6 weeks we recommend to check TSH to be sure that the dose of levothyroxine is the right one.
If she didn't start treatment, i would recommend to start treatment than to check it again, because without treatment it will persist high.

we dont really think the thyroid is cause of depression but wonder if it could make the deprression worse as she also has fatigue and nust cannot seem to get out of the depression.

that said her first thyroid test was in december. is it fine to wait for second test until early to mid february?

Hi again,
In every patient with depression is recommended to be checked the thyroid function, as it may play a role in worsening it or make it "resistant" to treatment.
The level of TSH you reported is not very high but anyway should be corrected.
6 weeks after starting treatment is the appropriate time to check it.

i am nust trying to figure out how immediately we need to retest her thyroid. she is not currently treating for hypothyroidism. they want to retest in a few weeks. i am asking if i need to expedite the second test.

Hi again,
You can check TSH every time if the doctor doubts the result. There is no need to wait a certain time.
If it persists high (it should persist if she didn't treat it) , treatment should be started.
