Hello thanks for using ask a doctor service

Please provide me more details about yourself.

What kind of issues are resulting in anger?

What do you do when you have anger outbursts like throwing things or hitting others or self harming?

Any thing that is persistently bothering you in personal, occupational or academic domains?

Any symptoms like increased risk taking behaviour, increased shopping or increased cheerfulness?

Thanks

Please provide me details in follow up.

Brief Answer:
Anger can be controlled with behavioural modifications

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for providing details

This could be occurring due to some mood disturbance or might be due to poor impulse control. Impulse control disorder like IED or intermittent explosive disorder can lead to sudden anger outbursts especially when an individual is provoked. This results in hitting others, violent abusive spells.

The anger can be controlled by medicines and also by psycho-social methods.

When ever any anger provoking incident occurs then at that time you should stop acting impulsively. If you can't control yourself and then in your mind say STOP and for some movements take the time to think. This time will help in avoiding unnecessary reactions. The impulsive explosion will be prevented and you will feel better because once you are little calmer you will then be able to present your point.

Saying STOP in your mind is kind of taking time or buying time like we take TIMEOUT in play. This will help you a lot. Then try to find out the cause why are you so much impulsive and what harm will be done if you will react to this. If in your mind you can make harm-benefit calculation then you will be able to remain relaxed even in anxious situations.

You can take a glass of cold water at that time to relax yourself. Drink the water by taking small sips and this will help in buying time for yourself. Breathing exercises too help to reduce anger in impulsive situations.

Please follow these steps and you will be alright.

Thanks
