Question: i am 13 weeks pregnant and wanted to terminate, my doctor prescribed misoprostol. will the fetus be alive when it is expelled?

Firstly, medical abortion is not advisable at this age of gestation. It is not very effective and surgical procedure is ideal to ensure complete abortion.

Secondly, most often the fetus is dead by the time of expulsion in such an early stage.

It is not advisable to stop treatment midway for mainly two reasons.

Firstly, even if the treatment is incomplete, you may not be able to save the fetus because the drug initiates uterine contractions.

Secondly, even if the fetus is saved, it might be born with defects as the drugs are not safe in pregnancy.
