Detailed Answer:
Hello Fredricka, Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.
I want to know whether you have any of the below mentioned symptoms :-
1. Burning pain in abdomen just below the ribs.
2. Esophageal regurgitation, which awakes you in between sleep.
Are you taking plavix for any heart condition or any other vascular disease?
If answer of above questions is yes then definitely it is gastric acid re-flux (GERD) which is causing esophageal burning.
For that minimum 2 weeks course of proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, esomeprazole) 12 hourly is required.
These medications should be taken 1 hour before or 2-3 hours after meals.
Prolongation of therapy is required if you have esophageal erosion/stricture, hoarseness of voice or dry cough because of acid reflux.
For esophageal examination you have to consult gastroenterologist or general surgeon, who will do endoscopic examination to rule out erosion or ulcer in esophagus and stomach.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
