Brief Answer:
Either can be taken in control, however, Unisom would be a better option...

Hello there, welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concern...

Ideally speaking, since the first trimester is the period of maximum growth of the baby, you shouldn't be taking any medications unless extremely necessary...

In the case of chronic insomnia, a few additional suggestions would be:

Avoid any form of daytime napping...

Daily physical activities, aerobics for about 30-40minutes...

Sleeping on the left lateral side and in a dark room devoid of any noise/bright light/distractions...

Now coming to your query, actually, in controlled dosage either one can be taken, but if there's associated nausea, Unisom would be a better choice. Otherwise, Benadryl can be taken...However, if despite this there's no improvement in insomnia, it'd be better to discuss with your treating Gynecologist for further assessment...

Kind Regards
