Question: i'm having trouble reading cbc results, these were the highlighted areas - low mcv (75) and mch (23.4) high mchc (31.1), high tibc (463). What does this mean? Could it be anemia or iron deficiency? I'm experiencing some hair loss too.

i'm also wondering what could be causing my hair loss thinning around hair line? Could it be ferritin being 40 even though that is still normal range? What can I do to increase low mcv, mch and ferritin? What's going on in these results?

Brief Answer:
The reports are related to anemia due to iron deficiency.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The MCV and MCH level are lower than normal when red blood cells are too small.

TIBC tends to be increased when iron stores are decreased.

This condition is called anemia.

Anemia may be caused by iron deficiency.

This medical condition can also cause hair loss or hair thinning.

I suggest to take you take iron and vitamin C supplements.

The iron will help treat the anemia while the vitamin C will help the absorption of the iron.

I also suggest eating a healthy diet rich in nuts and seeds, seafood, meat, and beans to help you get the iron you need to manage anemia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks for your detailed response. I agree this looks like iron deficiency anemia. I did want to also ask how long is it best to take iron supplements for? How many months would be recommended? I also feel tired a lot, so I must need more iron.

I also wanted to ask is the hair loss and hair thinning reversible when related to iron deficiency if I take supplements? How long to see improved results for hair and tiredness?

Thanks again in advance.

Brief Answer:
Follow up queries explained below in detail.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

In my daily practice, I recommend to take the iron supplements for four months.

After fourth months you should repeat the blood test.

If the hair fall is due to the iron deficiency you will see improvements in three weeks.

Take care dear,

Thanks again! One more question is how many iron pills per day is it best to take for a couple of months? I plan to take supplements and get my blood test again in four months.

Brief Answer:
For iron deficiency you may need 150-200 mg per day of elemental iron.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

For iron deficiency, you may need 150-200 mg per day of elemental iron.

You should see how many mg of iron is contained in the supplement that you will take.

If the supplement contains 150 mg of iron you should take one tablet per day.

Hope my answer was helpful.

Take care dear,
