My 15 Year Old Son Has Mono ... Diagnosed A
Question: my 15 year old son has mono ... diagnosed a few days ago and he was given a steroid shot yesterday morning and started the steroid pills today (methyl prednisone). His glands were/are very swollen and he has a SEVERE sore throat. He had an ultrasound and all organs are fine except the spleen is enalarged. No abdominal pain... he is in tremendous pain with his ear and his throat. My husband had bone cancer and has Oxycodone HCL 5mg tablets.. can my son take a half of one of these to relieve the severe pain? Tylenol and Advil are not working. I would never usually give this as my husband had tremendous pain and barely used any of the pain meds. We will only give it once. Please advise if there are any adverse reactions that can happen?
This is his mother... I guess my question is are there any adverse reactions with prednisone and oxycodone or hydrocodone5-325... my husband has these on hand because he had bone cancer... we are desperate to help my son who is in a lot of pain and can't sleep..
Brief Answer:
You can give him oxycodone safely
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.
I am sorry to hear this from you. You can use acetaminophen 500 mg or ibuprofen 400mg every 4 to 6 hours. If they don't work you can give him oxycodone Hlc 5mg every 4 to 6 hours while in pain.
It doesn't create addiction if used for a short time. Oxycodone doesn't interacts with prednisone so you can safely use it to him.
Hope I have answered the question.
