My Blood Pressure Varies In One Day Of A High

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Oct 2019
Question: my blood pressure varies in one day of a high of 165/89, pulse 46 to a low 85/51, pulse 58. Throughout this variation, I feel perfectly normal and am completely unaware of this except when I take my bp. The lowest pulse I recorded was 39 and yet I felt perfectly normal. I am almost 84 and lift weights at the gym 5 days a week. I see people in their 30's who cannot do what I am doing and need many minutes to recover before moving to the next machine but I am ready for the next machine in less than a minute. Should I be concerned?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome.
This is Dr Sameer, cardiologist.
It's so good to hear that you are so much active and healthy at this age.
BP generally increase with increasing age. But as the reading are too extreme (one ion very high side and one on Very low side), nothing can be said certainly. But we generally recommend a ambulatory BP monitoring (a device which records the BP for 24 hour continuously) which tells us exactly whether you actually have high BP.
In the meantime you can reduce the salt intake.

Now about your low heart rate. Professional athletes do have low baseline heart rate. But I will want you to have a ECG done to know the actual thing going on only after which we can tell whether it is safe for you or not.
Thanks and regards
