Question: my question: I recently had sex with a woman. two weeks prior, I had my wisdom teeth taken out. before having intercourse, I checked my mouth several times to make sure that there was no bleeding. my only concern: during the course of intercourse, I applied a small amount of saliva to my hand. I then administered that saliva to the womans vagina. from what I have read, I would have to have some sort of std for this to be an issue, but I would like to get some professional feedback/assurance/advice.

Brief Answer:
Regarding STDs

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

HSV type 1 can be transmitted through saliva during fingering and Syphilis if one has oral sores of Syphilis. Otherwise I don't think that the wisdom tooth thing would have made any difference since it would healed by 2 weeks so one cannot expect it to be bleeding at the time of fingering. Apart from that there is hardly any risk of any STDs from the saliva. Other stds like HIV, HPV, HBV, gonorrhea and chlamydia are usually transmitted only through unprotected vaginal or anal intercourse

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.

hello Dr. Kakkar,

thank you very much for your response. that was very helpful, and I am appreciative. I just have one follow up: it actually makes me slightly uncomfortable to mention this, because I am somewhat squeamish when it comes to some medical topics, but, as you mention in your response, "AIDS" can not be transferred in the process that I detail above? so, even if hypothetically this was something that I had, which I believe is highly unlikely, though I am going to get tested for some STDs because I have never before been tested, the process I describe above would not be a process where this would be transferred? I would very much appreciate your insight and just a little bit more information, if you do not mind. thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Brief Answer:
Regarding HIV

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
As far as HIV is concerned, saliva is not an infectious fluid. Saliva is inhibitory to the virus. The only exception is if it is blood mixed saliva. Otherwise, the only infectios fluids are genital secretions l(ike semen and vaginal fluids) and blood. So you need not worry.
Take care.
