Brief Answer:
Very wide set of choices requiring more data to accurately diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
It sounds as if this whole problem just started a week ago and that low back pain was where it seems to have started.

There are a number of different names of syndromes and disorders that you could be suffering from with just the symptom of back pain together with rib pain. The most obvious would be that of a traumatic injury as could be the case following a fall, a blow to the back and/or chest. For this type of diagnosis obviously a Chest X-ray would be indicated. There could also be a the possibility of a pneumonia or pleurisy (inflammation or infection of the coverings or outer LININGS of the lungs (called the PLEURA). This type of problem (usually infection) can cause rib pain

If multiple ribs are hurting then, there is a n entity called the PAINFUL RIB SYNDROME and this may classify as a NONCARDIAC cause of musculoskeletal type of chest pain that some individiauls may perceive as being rib or ribs pain. This could be the reflection or manifestation of actual JOINT PAIN in the thoracic or even lumbar spines which is translated to rib pain since the joint dysfunction at the level of the SPINAL COLUMN in the back of a patient clearly affects the function and stability of the RIBS which are ATTACHED to that dorsal column, make sense?

And so a consideration should be given to thoracic spinal column dysfunction resulting in painful ribs or even a single rib.

And so, in your particular case I would recommend an examination by a GOOD DOCTOR who should carefully (and gently) palpate and compress the ribs, the sternum, AND the very VERY BOTTOM of the sternum called the XIPHOID PROCESS as sometimes inflammation of the cartilaginous tissue itself can lead to instability of the joints between the sternum and the ribs in the chest. This can lead to pain.

I might then, recommend an X-RAY of the chest (and the thoracolumbar spine) looking for musculoskeletal pathologies such as osteoporosis, spinal column degenerative arthritic disease that could affect RIB JOINTS, thoraco-costal joint dysfunction or other problems that could cause more isolated and consistent RIB pain.
