Subclinical hyperthyroidism
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. Your sister's blood test results show a high total cholesterol and normal triglycerides. To know whether she should be on a cholesterol medication, it would be helpful to see the LDL and HDL cholesterol, but if she has high blood pressure, likely she would benefit from a statin medication such as atorvastatin.
For the thyroid tests, she has a very low TSH, and normal free T3 and T4, which we would call subclinical hyperthyroidism. At her age, and with how low the TSH is, it would generally be recommended to treat the cause. Usually this would be done with some further blood tests and a thyroid radionuclide scan, and can usually be treated with medications to suppress the thyroid function.
Usually this would cause weight loss, not weight gain, so I would suspect this is a separate issue. Can you explain more about what is a rational diet?
I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
