My Son Started Bleeding From His Penis Fairly Heavily. He
Needs to be evaluated, but possibly does not need to go to the ER
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Visible blood coming from the penis like this is definitely concerning and needs to be evaluated. It is especially worrisome for bladder cancer, even if his age makes this less likely, it should be evaluated to make sure it is not from this. He will likely need to see a urologist, who may want to look at his bladder with a scope. It may also be from stones or an infection, so the cause does need to be investigated.
This isn't necessarily an emergency, so I would say he doesn't need to go to the ER unless he begins to have problems with urinating, which may indicate that a blood clot or something else is blocking the urine. This would cause discomfort, which can become severe, and so for this he would need to go to the ER.
I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
